ARK: Survival Evolved vs Survival Ascended: Which Should You Host?

Comparing ARK Survival Evolved and Survival Ascended for server hosting. Graphics, performance, content, costs, and which version suits your community.

With two versions of ARK actively available, server owners face a real decision: host the tried-and-true Survival Evolved or invest in the newer Survival Ascended? Both games share the same core DNA of taming dinosaurs, building bases, and surviving a hostile world, but they differ meaningfully in technology, content, and community direction. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.

Engine and Graphics

The most visible difference is the engine. Survival Evolved runs on a heavily modified Unreal Engine 4.5, while Survival Ascended is built on Unreal Engine 5 with Nanite and Lumen technology.

In practice, this means Ascended has dramatically better lighting, shadows, textures, and environmental detail. Water reflections, foliage density, and creature models are noticeably improved. For players who prioritize visual quality and immersion, Ascended is a clear step forward.

The trade-off is performance. Ascended demands significantly more powerful hardware on both the client and server side. Players with older PCs may struggle to maintain acceptable frame rates, and server operators need to allocate more CPU, RAM, and storage per instance.

Content and Maps

This is where Survival Evolved still holds an advantage in raw volume. With over a decade of development, Evolved offers 12+ maps including The Island, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Genesis Parts 1 and 2, Ragnarok, Valguero, Crystal Isles, Lost Island, and Fjordur.

Survival Ascended launched with The Island in late 2023 and has been systematically remastering Evolved maps throughout 2024 and 2025. As of late 2025, available Ascended maps include The Island, Scorched Earth, The Center, Aberration, Genesis Part 1, Crystal Isles, Genesis Part 2, Lost Island, and Fjordur. The first original expansion, Lost Colony, launched in December 2025 with the Astraeos map and over 13 new creatures.

Ascended is approaching content parity, but Evolved still has more total playable content if you count every map and DLC.

Gameplay and Quality of Life

Ascended introduces several quality-of-life improvements that Evolved lacks:

  • In-game mod browser: Install and manage mods directly from the game menu on all platforms, including consoles
  • Improved combat: Better hit detection and smoother animations make PvP and creature combat more responsive
  • Camera controls: A customizable third-person camera with zoom provides better battlefield awareness
  • Inventory management: A redesigned item hotbar and improved drag-and-drop interface reduce friction
  • Cross-platform mods: Console players have access to mods for the first time through CurseForge integration

Evolved still works well, but its interface and combat feel dated compared to Ascended. That said, Evolved’s mechanics are deeply understood by the community, and years of balance patches have ironed out most issues.

Server Hosting Requirements

This is a critical consideration for anyone planning to host.

Survival Evolved

ResourceMinimumRecommended
CPU4 cores6+ cores
RAM8 GB12 GB
Storage15 GB20 GB (SSD)
OSWindows or LinuxLinux preferred

Survival Ascended

ResourceMinimumRecommended
CPU6 cores8+ cores
RAM16 GB20-24 GB
Storage20 GB30 GB (SSD)
OSWindows onlyWindows required

Ascended’s lack of native Linux server support is a notable limitation. It increases hosting costs since Windows instances typically cost more, and it removes a platform option that many experienced server administrators prefer.

Modding Ecosystem

Evolved has a massive modding community built over many years on the Steam Workshop. Thousands of mods cover everything from total conversions to quality-of-life tweaks.

Ascended uses CurseForge as its mod platform and the ecosystem is growing quickly, but it does not yet match Evolved’s sheer volume. However, Ascended’s cross-platform mod support is a significant advantage, especially for servers that welcome console players.

Community and Player Base

Evolved still maintains an active player base, particularly on established private servers and unofficial clusters. However, new players increasingly gravitate toward Ascended, and Studio Wildcard’s development focus is clearly on the newer title.

Wildcard has committed to supporting Ascended alongside the eventual release of ARK 2, provided player demand continues. Evolved, while not officially abandoned, receives minimal updates.

Cost Considerations

  • Evolved: Frequently on sale for under ten dollars. Lower server hosting costs due to reduced hardware requirements and Linux support
  • Ascended: Full-price purchase at approximately forty-five dollars. Higher server hosting costs due to greater resource demands

For community leaders, the lower barrier to entry of Evolved makes it easier to attract new players. Ascended’s higher cost can be a hurdle, but it also tends to attract a more committed player base.

Which Should You Host?

Choose Survival Evolved If

  • Your community has established characters and progress on Evolved servers
  • You want the widest possible map selection today
  • Your players have older hardware that cannot run Ascended smoothly
  • You prefer Linux-based server hosting for cost or familiarity

Choose Survival Ascended If

  • You are starting a new community from scratch
  • Visual quality and modern engine features matter to your players
  • You want access to new content like Lost Colony and future expansions
  • You want cross-platform mod support for console players
  • You are planning for the long term as Wildcard focuses development on Ascended
