Factorio Enters a New Era With Space Age

Factorio: Space Age launched alongside the free 2.0 base game update on October 21, 2024. It was the first major expansion in Factorio’s history, and it fundamentally changed what the game offers. Four new planets, a quality tier system, new enemies, elevated rails, and hours of new music transformed Factorio from a single-planet logistics puzzle into an interplanetary automation challenge.

Throughout 2025, Wube Software released dozens of patches refining the expansion, fixing bugs, and improving performance. For anyone running a Factorio server, this has been the most active period of development in the game’s history.

Space Age: Four New Planets

The expansion adds four planets beyond Nauvis, each with unique resources, hazards, and production challenges.

Vulcanus

A molten world without water. Lava pools can be processed into metals, and the surface is divided between mountains, ashlands, and lava basins. Vulcanus introduces Tungsten, an unbreakable material used to craft big mining drills and foundries. The challenge here is building without water-based cooling or standard power generation.

Fulgora

A lightning-scoured desert planet where the only resource is scrap piles left by an extinct alien civilization. The surface consists of island plateaus surrounded by deep oilsands. Electric storms rage at night, and the core gameplay loop revolves around recycling alien debris into usable materials while harnessing lightning for power.

Gleba

A biological world of plants and fungi. Resources here are organic and perishable, meaning they degrade into spoilage over time. This fundamentally changes factory design. You cannot stockpile biological resources the way you stockpile iron plates. Players must also contend with aggressive spider-like pentapods that threaten factory infrastructure.

Aquilo

The most hostile planet. A frozen world of liquid ammonia where machines stop working without active heating. Players must build heat pipe networks to keep everything operational, construct ice platforms to expand their factory footprint, and unlock cryogenic technologies and fusion power. Aquilo is the endgame planet and requires mastery of all other worlds to tackle effectively.

The Quality System

Space Age introduces a quality tier system that applies to every item, building, and piece of equipment in the game. There are five tiers: Normal, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. Higher quality items have improved attributes, with bonuses scaling up to 150% at Legendary tier.

Quality is created through chance when using quality modules in production buildings. The two highest quality tiers require technology from Gleba and Aquilo, tying the quality system directly to planetary progression.

This system adds vertical scaling as an alternative to building wider. Instead of doubling your factory size, you can upgrade existing production to higher quality for better output per machine.

Space Platforms and Logistics

Players build flying space platforms to transport goods between planets. These platforms are mobile factories in their own right, requiring their own production chains, defenses against space hazards, and careful resource management for interplanetary trips.

2025 Patch Highlights

Wube Software maintained an aggressive patching cadence throughout 2025. The game progressed through dozens of 2.0.x versions, with version 2.0.76 becoming the stable release as of early 2026.

Key Improvements

  • Combinator fixes: Decider, arithmetic, and selector combinators were updated as primary energy consumers with increased buffer sizes for better reliability during low power situations.
  • Selector combinator rebalance: Energy usage reduced from 5kW to 1kW.
  • Crash fixes: Multiple crash bugs were resolved, including issues with cloning trees and rocks marked for deconstruction, roboport requests with spoilable robots, and asteroid collector navmesh calculations.
  • UI improvements: Entity tooltip delay behavior was fixed so timers reset when moving the camera or character, eliminating blinking tooltip issues.
  • Performance: Continuous optimizations to the simulation engine, particularly for large bases with complex circuit networks.

What Is Next: Version 2.1

As of late 2025, Wube Software created a “Fixed for 2.1” section on the official forums, indicating active development on a 2.1 branch. Lead developer Kovarex has mentioned plans to add new achievements for 2.1. No release date has been announced, but the existence of a dedicated development branch suggests meaningful new content rather than just bug fixes.

Running a Factorio Server With Space Age

Space Age content works fully on dedicated servers. All four planets, the quality system, and space platform logistics function in multiplayer. The expansion does increase server resource requirements, particularly RAM and CPU, as the simulation now spans multiple planetary surfaces simultaneously.

At Reactor, our Factorio servers are optimized for large bases with thousands of machines. We support full mod synchronization, persistent worlds that run 24/7, and SFTP access for save file management. Whether you are exploring Vulcanus with friends or building a mega-base across all four planets, a dedicated server keeps the factory running.
