Hytale’s 2025 was one of the most dramatic stories in gaming. The block-based sandbox went from being canceled after $100 million in development costs to an independent reacquisition and a successful early access launch. Here is the full timeline and what players can expect.

The Cancellation (June 2025)

In June 2025, Riot Games officially canceled Hytale. After acquiring Hypixel Studios in 2020, Riot had invested heavily in rebuilding the game on a new cross-platform engine. Development costs exceeded $100 million, and the project was shut down without a public release.

The cancellation was met with widespread disappointment. Hytale had generated massive interest since its 2018 announcement trailer, which became one of the most-viewed game trailers on YouTube. Years of development blogs had built a dedicated community that was left without a game.

The Reacquisition (November 2025)

On November 17, 2025, Hytale’s original founders Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette announced they had reacquired the Hytale IP from Riot Games. Hypixel Studios reformed as an independent company, free from corporate ownership.

The team made a critical technical decision: they abandoned the newer cross-platform engine that Riot had been building and returned to the original version of Hytale that predated the Riot acquisition. This meant stepping away from years of engine work but returning to a more mature, playable build that was closer to the community’s expectations from the 2018 trailer.

Early Access Announcement (November 2025)

Within the same announcement, the team revealed a release date. Hytale would enter early access on January 13, 2026. Pre-purchases opened on December 13, 2025, in three tiers: the Standard Edition at $19.99, the Supporter Edition at $34.99, and the Cursebreaker Founders Pack at $69.99.

The speed of the turnaround surprised the gaming community. Going from cancellation to a playable early access build in roughly six months was possible only because the team reverted to the pre-Riot codebase.

What Launched in Early Access

Hytale’s early access build arrived on January 13, 2026, and was positively received by critics and players.

Three Core Modes

The launch included three distinct gameplay modes:

Exploration Mode is the primary adventure experience. Players travel through diverse biomes, gather materials, interact with NPCs, explore structures, fight enemies, and discover the world of Orbis. Combat features high-mobility mechanics with a selection of weapons, each with unique abilities.

Creative Mode removes all gameplay restrictions for players who want to build without limits. It provides full freedom for construction and design projects.

Modding Tools shipped from day one in a functional state. Hytale was designed with a server-side-first approach, meaning players can join modded servers without installing external mod packs. Creators can build custom content, minigames, and community experiences using the included tools.

The Memories System

A progression mechanic called Memories rewards players for exploring and interacting with creatures and factions. Collected memories are returned to The Heart of Orbis, unlocking permanent rewards and upgrades for everyone in the shared world.

Farming and Crafting

A farming system with a wide variety of crops and plants launched alongside gathering and crafting systems that support the survival gameplay loop.

Server Hosting and Multiplayer

Hytale was built with multiplayer as a core pillar. Even single-player worlds run on a local server in the background, making every world inherently multiplayer-ready. Converting a solo world to a shared server requires minimal configuration changes.

Technical Details

Dedicated servers require Java 25 and at least 4 GB of RAM. Both x64 and arm64 architectures are supported. The game uses the QUIC protocol over UDP, with port 5520 as the default. TCP forwarding is not required.

The basic startup command is:

java -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zip --bind 5520

Several hosting providers have already partnered with Hypixel Studios to offer managed Hytale server hosting from launch day.

What Comes Next

Hytale’s early access roadmap includes continued content additions, performance improvements, and expanded modding capabilities. The development team has been transparent about the game’s current limitations while emphasizing that the foundation is solid for long-term growth.

The Hytale community is already producing mods, custom maps, and server configurations. For groups looking to build something larger, a dedicated server with good uptime makes the difference between a hobby project and a thriving community.

Keep an eye on Reactor’s game hosting page for Hytale server availability as the game’s server ecosystem matures. Reliable hosting with automatic backups and mod support will be essential as the modding community grows.
