Unturned Updates in 2025: Limestone Map, Unity Upgrade, and a Massive Map Ahead

Every major Unturned update from 2025 covered: the Limestone curated map, Unity 2022 LTS engine upgrade, brick building overhaul, and the biggest map teaser.

More than a decade after its initial release, Unturned continues to receive meaningful updates from developer Smartly Dressed Games and its active community of curated map creators. 2025 brought an engine upgrade, a new Mediterranean-inspired map, base building improvements, and the teaser for what will be the largest curated map in the game’s history.

Unity 2022 LTS Engine Upgrade

The most significant technical change of the year was the migration to Unity 2022 LTS. This engine upgrade was primarily focused on stability, but it brought several tangible improvements that server hosts and players will notice:

  • Improved zombie pathfinding: The navigation library used by zombies received a major upgrade, making AI behavior more consistent and reducing edge cases where zombies would clip through obstacles or get stuck.
  • New anti-aliasing option: SMAA was added as an alternative to TAA and FXAA, giving players with different hardware a better visual quality option.
  • General stability fixes: The LTS (Long Term Support) branch of Unity is designed for reliability, which translates to fewer random crashes on both clients and dedicated servers.

The Unity 2022 build was available on the Preview branch for testing before rolling out to the main branch, giving server administrators time to verify compatibility with their mod setups.

Limestone: A Mediterranean Survival Map

Released on September 22, 2025, Limestone arrived as the latest addition to Unturned’s Curated Map Program. This community-created map takes players to a sun-bleached Mediterranean coastline filled with rocky quarries, sea cliffs, and compact villages.

What Makes Limestone Different

Limestone changes the survival loop in several notable ways:

  • Resource distribution is tighter. Food, fuel, and ammunition spawn in smaller, more concentrated clusters rather than being spread evenly. This encourages movement and cooperation instead of allowing players to camp a single location indefinitely.
  • Crawler zombies are less dominant. Compared to the initial release balance, crawler density was reduced, shifting combat encounters toward other zombie types.
  • High-end structures are raid-resistant. Brick and metal structures hold up better against player raids, rewarding investment in base building.

Technical Improvements in the Patch

The Limestone release patch (3.25.9.0) also included reworked fog and ambience systems, NPC event hook additions for modders, and performance improvements thanks to an updated world streaming pipeline. These backend changes benefit all maps, not just Limestone.

France Map Overhaul

The classic France curated map received a substantial patch in 2025, bringing it in line with more recent game updates. The patch included bug fixes, quality-of-life upgrades, and performance improvements that had accumulated since the map’s original release. The France development team also announced a new standalone map project that aims to build on what they learned from the original.

Brick Building Overhaul and Clay Nodes

A dedicated content update overhauled brick structures, establishing them as the definitive best base building material in the game. Key changes include:

  • Clay nodes were added to all official maps, making it consistent and practical to farm the materials needed for brick construction.
  • Every missing brick structure piece was added. Previously, players had to mix and match materials because certain shapes were only available in wood or metal. Now a full base can be built entirely in brick without compromises.

For server hosts, this update shifts the PvP meta. Brick bases are now the standard for serious groups, and servers with maps that include clay node spawns will see more engaged base building.

The Biggest Curated Map Yet: Early 2026

In late 2025, Smartly Dressed Games teased the next curated map, created by August, Clue, Nolam, Spebby, Sultan, and Tiway. It will be the largest community-made map ever officially added to Unturned.

Details revealed so far include:

  • Sprawling marshlands transitioning to forests covered in constant ashfall along the coast.
  • Extensive cave systems hidden beneath the surface.
  • Tiered deadzones with progressive difficulty.
  • Secrets and unmarked locations designed for exploration-focused gameplay.
  • A massive arsenal of weapons with extensive progression systems.

The map was originally hoped for a late 2025 release but was given additional development time to ensure quality. It is expected in early 2026.

Open Source Ambitions

Smartly Dressed Games has expressed hope for Unturned to go open source in the future. While no firm date has been committed, the developer indicated this could happen in late 2025 or early 2026. If it materializes, this would be a landmark event for the modding community and could dramatically expand what server hosts can customize.

What This Means for Server Hosts

Every update in 2025 directly benefits dedicated server operators. The Unity engine upgrade improves server stability. Limestone and the France overhaul add fresh map options for communities. The brick building update creates new progression goals for players.
